Counseling for Victims of Sexual Violence

Another vital resource for those who have experienced rape is Christian counseling. The American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) is the largest organization of Christian counselors in the United States. One of their main initiatives is to create resources to help people find licensed counselors and faith-based treatment centers. Their search tool, Christian Care Connect (https://connect.aacc.net), connects clients with counselors and clinics so those in need of mental health services can locate someone in their area.

“A good counselor can help women navigate this situation. The most important thing is her health and the health of the baby. That includes medically, emotionally, and spiritually,” said Dr. Tim Clinton, president of the AACC.

For Clinton, getting the church involved is key.

“Women are a sleeping giant in the church,” he said. “But they are often silenced because they carry the shame or stigma of their past [whether it’s rape or an abortion]. Yet so many of these women can step in and be a point of light. They can talk about their decision, and they can help educate, engage, and equip the church in this area.”

And they can tell their stories. That’s what makes Jennifer Christie’s decision to raise her son such a powerful message for life.
